Are the Chatmons the “first family” of the blues?
I can’t think of any other blues family that produced more musical offspring than that of Mr.Chatmon, a “musicaner” during slavery -
Charlie Patton-almost certainly a half brother of Lonnie, Sam & Bo.
Lonnie-mainstay of the Mississippi Sheiks
Sam-songwriter, storyteller, keeper of the flame
(taken from a great film called American Patchwork-see it if you can!)
Bo Carter-The black sheep of the Chatmon boys
(I was going to link one of his “single entendre” songs, but this seemed particularly current)
and…nephew Memphis Slim
Comments, opinions, thoughts?
I can agree with that;but, other families may be more well known:for example-
Sonny Boy Williamson I was the cousin of Homesick James Williamson (who pretended to be the cousin of Elmore James)
Buddy Guy was the brother of Phil Guy and the son-in-law of Sunnyland Slim
J.B. Hutto was the uncle of Lil’ Ed (leader of the Blues Imperials)
Bernard Allison-son of Luther Allison
Shemeika Copeland-daughter of Johnny Copeland
Ronnie Baker Brooks and Wayne Baker Brooks-sons of Lonnie Brooks
Kenny Neal-son of Raful Neal
