First sock-knitting How to join you on DPN?

Hi guys, I'm teaching myself to knit socks … I know how work the bases, but all models of socks that after you move your cast on stitches to the other hands the first thing to do is join. I understand that it means to join the stitches if you are knitting a circle, but I do not understand how to do the join. I have read many descriptions, but no real sense to me. For example … say that I cast on 24 stitches and distribute them on three needles so there are eight on each needle. Now I am ready to join … all instructions say join the cast first point on .. do you use to make a hollow needle knitting stitch but move the needle that has already cast on stitches on it? In other other words, should I let the hollow needle in my right hand empty and somehow transfer stitches welded to one of three hands that are already occupied? I searched the web for a video of him, but could not find one … not good anyway … Thank you all for your help, you all rock! :)
