Crochet hook size question?

I am trying to make this pair of earrings http://www.jpfun.com/patterns/free/jewelry/f107008_daintyearrings.shtml using a 4.5mm Size 7 crochet hook and size 10 thread, however my stitches come out too big and not neatly pull like the ones shown in the pattern picture. Am I using the worn size hook, or what am I doing wrong? Even if I pull my stitches tight they still look too loose. Any suggestions?

you are using the wrong hook – the pattern states you need a size 7 STEEL crochet hook – these are fine crochet hooks used with thread/cottons not your normal crochet hooks used with yarn/wool.

A steel crochet hook US size 7 is 1.5mm which as you can see is a LOT smaller than the size 7/4.5mm you are using.
