Why is my slip stitch so visible?
Ok i’m making a crochet hat fro a pattern and atfer every round it says slip stitch into the 2nd turning chain so i do that but it looks so bad when i do it. there are big holes and a line all the way down. How can i make it more invisible?
When you are inserting your hook into that 2nd turning chain, are you inserting the hook under the top two loops? If not — if you’re only grabbing one loop then this will explain the “big holes” you are seeing.
If the hole is not from the join but rather from the ch 2 itself (due to not working a stitch immediately next to it), consider learning about “linked stitches” — it’s one of the techniques I have listed here: http://members.aol.com/crochetwithdee/typesof.html — with practice, you can learn how to link the turning chain to the first stitch to eliminate the holes caused by skipping that first space. It’s a technique worth tinkering with.
The line that you see in your work is natural when working with circles. It’s called a “walking line” — sometimes the line is straight down, other times it “travels” diagonally down the work.
To make it (somewhat) disappear there are tricks you can try. First, see if working your slip stitch under the top two loops of your turning chain creates more pleasing results for you.
You could also, depending upon the pattern, opt to change from working in rows (going back & forth) to working in rounds (never joining, never changing direction). Just be sure to keep the stitch count the same and be sure to use stitch markers to keep your place during each row.
I hope this helps,
