There are many patterns available. I suggest using any pattern for a tam… it is just block differently. You can also just take any ordinary pattern, and make several rounds of increases right after the brim, as much as you wanted, and then slowly decrease as for the hat as normal.

I would suggest circular needles, if you can — much easier. You can use any length of needles, using the Magic Loop method. But there are no tips for double points different than regular straight needles. Divide your work on four needles (use a fifth for knitting) and away you go. There is nothing different.
