Could someone help me with knitting?
I’m a beginner and I’m knitting a striped scarf for myself. I don’t know if I’m doing this right, so I was wondering if someone who knows how to knit properly could tell me. For the scarf I was doing one row know and then another row pearl. It was all fine until I switched colours. When I did that, a little line of two colours appeared. Is that supposed to happen, or am I doing something wrong???
Without seeing what you are doing, it is hard to understand what is happening. You think you are describing it correctly, but you are not using some words properly! There is some knitting jargon you need to learn.
If you are doing knit one row, purl one row, that is fine. When you change colours, you do it on your knit row. When you look at the other side (the back side) you will see that you get the two colours mixed up. That is how it works. That is why this is the “back” side or the wrong side. You will see that in stores, scarves with stripes are usually tubes… the bad side is hidden inside. Sorry, there is no way around this issue.
You can make a scarf with all knit… no purl rows. That is garter stitch. It is not easy to make a scarf when you change colours… you are going to get those same blips of colour no matter what you do.
And of course, you already know that doing it in stocking stitch, you are going to get curling. There are ways to get around that, but that is a different question.
I really strongly suggest that you take a beginner knitting class. You can ask your local yarn store (LYS) or library, or community centre, or church group, or local guild. You will learn all the proper techniques, all the correct terminology, and how to read patterns. Very useful information!!
