Cross Stitch – What does this mean?
I just bought my first stand-alone cross stitch pattern and all supplies for the project. I only used the kits and Aida fabric at this point. The project includes 32ct linen and said, "… Using two strands of yarn over son of two lin "I know that" two components "refers to using two of the six strands of yarn … pretty standard. But never used linen, which does the "two son" mean? Does this mean that a "square" to a simple cross stitch actually consists of 9 holes in the fabric? Also, how much fabric should I leave around the outside of the project, when I cut my fabric?
Aida is a "block weave" fabric, which means that if you look at it, is made of clusters of son woven into the fabric. Machine (or stamens) is composed of individual fibers of fabric. Rather than point of each hole you make in Aida, you prick holes all others when you are using linen or muslin. Image board tic-tac-toe, like #. Come bottom left, past the middle hole, get off at the top right corner. It seams "on two". Finish your X by the same steps in the opposite direction. Personally, I much prefer sheets / evenweaves in Aida, as the bottom leaves look so much nicer. Also, as you gain experience and begin to explore other types of stitches (carnations, Rhodes, etc.), they are much easier on the web. All simply mesh the old quarter (the ones that look like `and drive you nuts on Aida) will be much easier on the web because you do not have to punch an extra hole to do so. BTW, 32 ct over 2 sheets out the same as 16 ct Aida. I prefer to leave a border of fabric 3 "on all sides. HTH
